I was notified by the AOG on 15 Feb 2005 that Jane Mary Mengel died on 9 Feb 2005.  Neither the AOG nor  I has any information regarding what caused her death.

You may send condolences to her parents:

Leroy & Annie Mengel
1614 South Westhaven Drive
Oshkosh, WI 54904

A memorial service was held on 13 February at Modesto Junior College, Student Center, 435 College Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to:

The Sierra Club
85 Second St., 2nd Floor
San Francisco, CA   94105-3441
or you can donate on-line at https://ww2.sierraclub.org/membership/donate/.

The 2004 Register of Graduates says that Jane resigned her commission in 1990 as a Captain.  She was a navigator, and had been assigned as an instructor at Mather when she separated.

A Google search seems to indicate that she was a math/science/engineering instructor at Modesto Junior College at the time of her death.

That's all the information I have at this time. I'm sure I speak for the class when I say our hearts go out to Jane's family.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.

On 15 Feb, Kay Grosinske e-mailed me the following obituary, as printed in the Modesto Bee:

Jane Mary Mengel

JANE MARY MENGEL APRIL 1, 1960 - FEB 9, 2005 Beloved daughter of Mary Dorn Mengel and LeRay L. Mengel died on Wed. February 9, 2005. Jane was born on April 1, 1960, in Fond du Lac, WI, where her two sisters, Kathleen Mengel Flesch and Elizabeth Mengel welcomed her. She soon became a big sister to Mark and Matthew Mengel.

Jane was the valedictorian of the Goodrich Senior High School class of 1978. Upon graduation she received an appointment by Senator William Proxmire to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Spring, CO. Jane was in the second class of women that was admitted to the Academy. In 1982, she graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with high honors and received her diploma from Vice President George H.W. Bush. After graduation, she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Throughout her military career, Jane was a Navigator on an AWAC surveillance plane and taught navigation. She was assigned to posts in California and Oklahoma and internationally in Iceland and Saudi Arabia. After leaving the Air Force, Jane worked on the Hubble Telescope before her love of teaching brought her to Modesto. For the past fourteen years, Jane enjoyed teaching engineering and mathematics at Modesto Junior College. She received a Masters of Engineering from the California State University, Sacramento and was in the process of completing a Ph.D in Adult Education at Capella University.

Jane's love of athletics won her numerous awards throughout her life. A gymnast throughout high school and college, Jane maintained her connection to gymnastics for many years as a Judge. An avid biker and traveler, she biked across the US from San Francisco to New Hampshire. She also biked throughout New England, Greece, Italy and Spain. Jane was an avid tennis and poker player. She enjoyed teaching, hiking, skiing, in-line skating and camping.

Her loss will be deeply felt by her family, especially her six nephews; her coworkers and students, her many friends, and her beloved dog, Finney. Her brother Mark and her maternal and paternal grandparents precede her in death. Upon Jane's wishes, her body was donated for scientific study. Her cremated remains will be returned to Wisconsin.

There will be a remembrance celebration of Jane's life on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at the Modesto Junior College East Campus Student Center in the Fireside Room from 2 to 5 pm. The Mengel family welcomes all who knew Jane to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jane's honor to the Sierra Club.
